Sumatran elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus)

Population left: 2,400 to 2,800
Feeding on a variety of plants and depositing seeds wherever they go, Sumatran elephants contribute to a healthy forest ecosystem. Civil conflicts, hunting and poaching for tusker have reduced their population to a large extent.
