Wayne Rogers was promised equal top billing with Alan Alda when he signed on to star in Korean War drama M*A*S*H in 1972. His character Trapper and Alda’s Hawkeye were meant to get equal airtime, but Hawkeye grew more popular and so the writers gave him more lines.
Angry at being relegated to a sidekick, Rogers unexpectedly quit after season three; the network tried to sue him for breach of contract but he’d never actually got around to signing his contract so he got off scot-free.
