Bread and The Liver Birds creator Carla Lane has passed away at the age of 87.
The TV comedy writer from Liverpool died at a nursing home in Mossley Hill earlier today.
Ms Lane - born Romana Barrack - was once one of the UK’s most successful and highly paid TV scriptwriters and became a household name through her hit series.
She was also known for her support for animal welfare charities - including the Carla Lane Animals in Need Sanctuary.
Ms Lane rose to fame with her work on shows such as The Liver Birds and Bread, both set in Liverpool.
She also worked on the BBC’s Butterflies, The Last Song and The Mistress.
As well as a distinguished writing career Ms Lane, whose childhood homes included Heswall and West Derby, was a keen supporter of animal welfare.
Just last year she opened the £315,000 special care unit at the Carla Lane Animals in Need Sanctuary in Melling.
The charity, which took on Carla’s name in 2013, is a non-profit organisation which rescues abandoned and ill-treated animals.
Fran Ellis who worked alongside Ms Lane at the Animals in Need charity today paid tribute to her and said: “She really was an amazing lady.”
