Gary Numan stormed the charts with the synth-pop masterpiece "Cars" in 1979. The track, off "The Pleasure Principle," was perhaps the first true new-wave crossover hit, swirling with space-age sounds and anchored by a killer melody and Numan's robotic singing. Disrespected at the time, Numan is now considered a pioneer of industrial music, and luminaries such as Dave Grohl and Trent Reznor have cited him as a key influence.
