Jonathan Ross was served several back-handers in an excruciating interview with tennis star Johanna Konta which left audience members squirming.
The pre-recorded chat with the British women’s Number One, 24, got off to an awkward start when Jonathan asked her about people she would like to play against or people she’s wary of playing.
She started to answer and then told him: “This is such a boring question” to which Jonathan hit back: “I’ll be the judge of that.”
The presenter, who is a tennis fan, gave his verdict on her semi-final match with Angelique Kerber at the Australian Open and she interrupted him: “Is this your professional opinion by the way?”
He then got her to try and hit grapes into the mouth of Taylor Lautner using her tennis racquet. He tried to tell her to change her grip and she snapped: “Really? Leave me alone.”
She was talking about how she has a “mental coach” to deal with the mental aspects of the game, fellow guest Rob Brydon chipped in saying he’d heard Tim Henman say tennis players need a selective memory to forget bad shots straight away.
She got gasps from the audience when she hit back: “Is that what you do with your performances?”
Rob replied: “Do you know what? I was starting to warm to you.”
Jonathan told a story about how he went to support Tim Henman at Queens and was sat next to his opponent’s family.
He said Tim found that off-putting when he looked into the crowd.
After he finished telling the story she just said: “Did that actually happen?” Jonathan replied: “Are you calling me a liar?
"Yes, it happened.”
An audience member said: “Jonathan handled things very well but Johanna seemed really frosty. It wasn’t very comfortable to watch at all.”
Despite the interview, Johanna said of the interview on Facebook: “One of the coolest things I’ve gotten to do thus far.”
