The Canadian singer caused a stir when he posted a picture of a mystery woman's rear to Instagram.
The Haven't Met You Yet singer made his own version of a photobomb with a photo-BUM as he was seen grinning at the camera with his arms folded as his wife Luisana Lopilato took a picture of a woman behind in small denim shorts.
After being criticised by some of his fans he has issued a statement, insisting he didn't mean to upset anyone.
He said: "Anybody who knows me would never misinterpret the message of the photo my wife took in Miami that seems to have caused unexpected rage by some people.
"I do not court controversy. But I realize that a photo that was meant to be complimentary and lighthearted has turned into a questionable issue. "For the record, It hurts me deeply that anyone would think that I would disrespect women or be insulting to any human being," the statement continued.
"I was not brought up that way and it is not in my character. I regret that there are people out there who found the photo offensive. That was not and is not my intention.
"Women are to be celebrated, loved, respected, honored and revered. I've spent my life believing that and will continue to do so."
Next to the picture, he wrote online at the time: "There was something about this photo lu took ,that seemed worthy of instagram. #myhumps #babygotback #hungryshorts #onlyinmiami #picoftheday #beautifulbum (sic)"
One user wrote: "She's allowed to wear whatever the F she wants to wear. It's HER body. That doesn't mean she should be subjected to the ridicule of millions of people."
Another said: "You...are...disgusting."
