Mountain gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei)

A silverback mountain gorilla seen in the Virunga National Park, near the Uganda border in eastern Congo, Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2008.

Population left: 880
Found in forests high in the mountains of the Congo basin, mountain gorillas have thicker fur as compared to the other great apes. Ongoing civil conflict, loss of habitat and poaching are threats to their population.
