Meryl Streep is one of the world's most celebrated actors, but that wasn't
always the case. She has revealed how she was turned down for a role early on
in her career because she wasn't pretty enough - and was even described an an
"ugly thing" during the audition.
The film was the famous 1976 remake of King Kong - Meryl auditioned to be
the leading lady after the director's son recommended her. She stood before
Italian director Dino De Laurentis as he exclaimed, in Italian: "Why do
you bring me this ugly thing?"
Meryl, who can speak the language, replied: "I'm sorry I'm not
beautiful enough to be in King Kong!"
Of course she went on to have major success, but now she's admitted on The
Graham Norton Show that the incident did have a lasting effect on her, saying
it was "very sobering as a young girl".

world's biggest stars missed out on...
